High fives for Science in ERA

The reputation of the Faculty of Science as a destination for world-leading research has been given a boost with the release of the 2015 Excellence in Research Assessment (ERA) from the Australian Research Council (ARC).

The University of Melbourne was ranked as "above world standard" or "well above world standard" in all of the major disciplines that the Faculty of Science contributes to.

Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences and Environmental Sciences all received the highest score possible, placing them "well above world standard", while Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences were ranked as "above world standard".

This is a significant improvement on the previous ERA assessment in 2012.

Sub-disciplines that received a 5 out of 5 ranking in the ERA were:

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Statistics
  • Astronomical and Space Sciences
  • Atomic, Molecular, Nuclear, Particle and Plasma Physics
  • Classical Physics
  • Optical Physics
  • Quantum Physics
  • Macromolecular and Materials Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry
  • Atmospheric Sciences
  • Geochemistry
  • Environmental Science and Management
  • Ecology
  • Genetics
  • Human Geography
