Vale Professor Peter Hall

The Faculty of Science is mourning the loss of one of its most esteemed and accomplished academics. From the School of Mathematics and Statistics, ARC Laureate Fellow, Professor Peter Hall AO, FAA FRS passed away on the 9th of January after a long illness.

As a historically significant member of his own field, this is a great loss for the School, the University of Melbourne, and the mathematics and statistics community worldwide.

Peter published over 500 research papers, made outstanding and innovative contributions to statistics and probability theory, and received countless fellowships and awards including the ‘Nobel Prize of Statistics’, the COPSS Presidents’ Award.

Despite these accolades, Peter remained unassuming and modest about his achievements.  He was also extraordinarily generous with his time, be it for students, colleagues or for science more broadly.
