Build your academic skills

Studying at university requires you to think, write and demonstrate your knowledge in new and challenging ways – but there are many services available to help you do it.

Diagnostic English Language Assessment

The Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA for short) is a tool designed to by the University of Melbourne to assess your strengths and weaknesses in academic reading, writing and listening. It is not an exam and you can’t fail.

DELA results will not appear on your transcript or affect your admission to the University. The aim is to identify areas of English you may wish to develop to assist with your transition to graduate study at the University.

The DELA is offered throughout Orientation Week and is held in one of the University’s teaching venues. Times will be made available close to the date.

Graduate Science Academic English Tutorial

The Graduate Science Academic English Tutorial is a series of face-to-face workshops that take place during Semester 1 and 2. These workshops offer participants the opportunity to develop language skills among fellow science students. Places are limited and applications are required.

The Tutorial can be particularly helpful if you have identified areas for improvement during your Diagnostic English Language Assessment (DELA).
