Since 1984 an annual donation has been made, by Emeritus Professor J.F. Ward of Townsville, in memory of his great-aunt Edith Ward, who in 1896 was among the first 55 women to graduate from the University of Melbourne. It also commemorates the association over a span of four generations of the Ward Family with the School of Physics. Professor Ward died in 2013 and his family have committed to support the award into the future through annual donations of $600.
