Our final virtual seminar for 2020 was held on Friday 4 December at 10am AEDT. A video recording from the webinar can be viewed below.

Our centre was pleased to host Ciprian Crainiceanu is a Professor of Biostatistics at Johns Hopkins University. He obtained his PhD in 2003 from Cornell University. Professor Crainiceanu is working brain imaging and wearable and implantable technology. He leads the development of Neuroconductor, an open-source platform for testing and dissemination of reproducible computational imaging in R. He also leads the Wearable and Implantable Technology (WIT) working group. Seminar Title: Objective physical activity monitoring using wearable devices

Abstract:

Wearable accelerometers coupled with other devices (heart monitors, GPS trackers) and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) provide a new and powerful way to quantify physical activity. This talk shows that physical activity summaries derived from accelerometers: (1) substantially outperform traditional risk factors of mortality; and (2) provide strong complementary information about the health status of the individual in addition to traditional risk factors. This talk also discusses methodological problems and provide some potential solutions raised by the new type of data generated by wearable accelerometers. The presentation is motivated by NHANES and UK Biobank data, two large, publicly available studies that have collected objective physical activity data using accelerometers.
