Alison Harcourt featured on ABC 7.30

Ms Alison Harcourt, an 88 year-old statistician who works at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, was featured on the ABC 7.30 program on Monday night.

Ms Harcourt talked about her studies, where she was one of only two women in her class at the University of Melbourne in 1947; her research, including a ground-breaking paper on linear programming in 1960; and why she still teaches when most of her contemporaries have long-since retired.

She also spoke about the under-representation of women in mathematics and her hope that her story can help inspire more girls into mathematics and statistics.
