Cambridge Australia Scholarships awarded to three University of Melbourne Science alumni

Cambridge Australia Scholarships provides scholarships for outstanding Australian graduates to undertake Masters and PhD studies at the University of Cambridge.

This year four University of Melbourne alumni, including three alumni from the Faculty of Science have been awarded these prestigious scholarships. They will commence postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in October.

Elizabeth Kyran - Cambridge Australia Poynton Scholarship

Elizabeth undertook Honours in Science (Medical Biology WEHI) graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2017 with First Class Honours.

Elizabeth says “Cambridge is world renowned for the quality of its biomedical research and I am excited by the prospect of working in this environment. At this stage in my career I am certain I am ready for a period of rigorous research training within the competitive and successful Cambridge community.”

Elizabeth intends to undertake a MRes + PhD in Stem Cell Biology.

Philip Erm - Cambridge Australia Poynton Scholarship

Philip graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2017 having studied his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Science with First Class Honours.

Philip’s area of study is that release Fisheries are vital for food security. However, the impacts of fishing pose some of the greatest immediate threats to marine biodiversity. Potential solutions to reconciling marine conservation with demand for fish include better regulation of fishery practices, or, alternatively, the establishment of marine reserves. Although opinions are divided over which of these approaches holds most promise, parallel research on land sharing (where land is farmed in a ‘wildlife-friendly’ manner) and land sparing (where a smaller area of land is farmed intensively, allowing the rest to be reserved) may have potential for shedding new light on this debate.

Philip will be studying a PhD in Zoology.

Adrian Agisilaou - Cambridge Australia Patrick Moore Scholarship

Adrian graduated with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne with a Masters of Science in Pure Maths in 2017.

Adrian says “The opportunity to immerse myself in mathematics and join a large community with interests similar to my own is profoundly appealing. My research interests lie in combinatorics and number theory, particularly aspects which have a probabilistic or analytic flavour. These are areas in which Cambridge excels, offering many in-depth courses which serve as excellent preparation for a PhD.”

Adrian will be studying a Masters in Pure Mathematics.

Matthew Psycharis - Cambridge Australia Caius Scholarship

Matthew graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and then went on to undertake a Juris Doctor degree in Law graduating in 2017 from the University of Melbourne with First Class Honours.

Matthew’s area of research is what subject-matter limitations (if any) can be placed, or ought to be placed, on advisory direct democratic exercises, as a function of UK and Australian constitutional doctrine.

Matthew has undertaken his LLM at the University of Cambridge and will now proceed to complete his PhD in Law.
