John McKenzie ECR Award applications are now open
Applications for the Faculty of Science John McKenzie Early Career Researcher (ECR) Award are now open. The award provides seed funding of $20,000 for early career researchers with an academic appointment in one of the Faculty’s seven Schools and aims to assist awardees to establish their research program, particularly in the Faculty, but also more broadly with partners external to the University of Melbourne.
Supported through the John McKenzie Fellowships fund, the Faculty of Science John McKenzie ECR Award honours Professor John McKenzie FAA, an internationally-renowned geneticist who researched the population genetics of insecticide resistance. Professor McKenzie is a former dean of the Faculty of Science and deputy vice-chancellor of research at the University of Melbourne.
Last year’s grant was awarded to a joint submission from Dr Amy Prendergast and Dr Teresa Konlechner (School of Geography). Their project, Climatic vulnerability of Australia’s largest, and most culturally significant, coastal dune field, represents the first systematic evaluation of the past and present processes of dune development. In partnership with Parks Victoria, they will evaluate the resilience of the Croajingolong National Park in East Gippsland based on its potential for mobility.

The dune fields in this area, specifically at Point Hicks, provide an exceptional opportunity to examine the evolution of transgressive dune fields within coastal Victoria. The study will employ a range of methodologies to map the phases of dune stability and to quantify the climate during each dune phase, with the results of the study to be used to guide the future management of the Croajingolong National Park, and dune fields throughout Victoria.
Applications for the Faculty of Science John McKenzie ECR Award close at 4pm on Friday 31 August 2018. The guidelines and application form can be found on the Faculty of Science grants website. All enquiries should be directed to Linda Richardson.
