Electrical Engineering Technician

What does an electrical engineering technician do?

Electrical engineering technicians assist in electrical engineering research, design, manufacture, assembly, construction, operation and maintenance of electrical.

You could work with electronic equipment such as communication equipment, medical monitoring devices, navigational equipment and computers, usually under the direction of engineering staff. You may work in product evaluation and testing, using measuring and diagnostic devices to adjust, test, and repair equipment.

Completing the Electrical Systems major in the Bachelor of Science will enable you to integrate the mathematics of signals, systems and information in the fundamental applications of electrical engineering in areas such as telecommunications, monitoring and automation, energy distribution, and digital computing.

Why does an electrical engineering technician do this?

Electrical engineering technicians use technology to solve the world's problems. You could be called upon to create solutions in the aerospace industry, the built environment, the oil and gas industry, power generation sector, rail engineering sector, utilities, defence, and in the fast-moving consumer goods industry. From the global positioning system that can continuously provide the location of a vehicle to giant electric power generators, this group of professionals are responsible for a wide range of technologies.

How does an electrical engineering technician do their job?

Graduate electrical engineering technicians assist engineers in the more practical areas of engineering, including:

  • Design and operation of industrial control systems
  • Communications systems
  • Electronic circuits
  • The generation and distribution of electrical power for commercial, industrial, military or scientific use
  • Quality control to inspect electrical equipment and systems
  • Experimental design including testing and data collection
  • Product design, develop and production

Where do electrical engineering technicians do their work?

Electrical engineering technicians can find employment in a research or technical engineering capacity. Graduates can be employed in a broad array of areas within manufacturing firms and industry, including: aeronautical and space, automotive, professional and scientific equipment, consumer products, chemical and petrochemical, computers, construction, defence, electric utilities and energy industries, telecommunications, and transport. Some settings may include:

  • Working in computer terminals doing design work;
  • Manufacturing plants designing and manufacturing products such as communications devices;
  • Civil engineering projects such as electrical power grids;
  • Working in a laboratory in research and development;
  • Working in an office as a sales and marketing professional for electrical and electronic devices.
