Chathuri Jayasundera

Chathuri pursued a Master of Biotechnology to learn how to apply her scientific skills to fields like medicine and agriculture. There's more than just learning the science, you've got to learn what to do with it.

I wanted to pursue my Masters at the University of Melbourne because of the ample research opportunities, exciting study areas and most importantly, how welcoming and accepting of international students the community is. I received the Science Graduate Scholarship in recognition of my undergraduate academic performance, and this has helped me financially, but also helped to boost my confidence as an international student studying in Australia.

I chose to study Biotechnology because I’m interested in learning how these techniques can be applied to fields like medicine and agriculture. The subjects have fascinated me because I’ve realised what wonders can be done with the latest technologies – I've learned about CRISPR, gene drives and gene therapy. Combining these studies with subjects about project management and “lab to life” have been invaluable with building my skills to help me work in an industry once I’ve graduated.

Throughout my time in this course, I’ve appreciated how I’ve been encouraged to participate in student engagement programs, clubs and societies, and meet other students. The academics have been encouraging during lectures and workshops to build my confidence asking questions and telling us about research opportunities, career advice and internships. I’ve been able to get a job in the School ofBioSciences as a demonstrator for first year undergraduate students which has given me the opportunity to learn what it’s like to work at a university and interact with peers and other students.

There are so many ways to get involved at university, with careers advice to boost your future employability and fun ways to make new friends. There are activities organised by student societies that can help you learn more about the university as well as the country. Being in the heart of the Melbourne CBD has meant that there are so many research institutes that are affiliated with the university, such as WEHI and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute that we are able to meet and talk to experts and learn about research.
