What attracted you to study at the University of Melbourne?

Studying science at the University of Melbourne allowed me to explore numerous different science pathways and fine-tune my interests. I studied a Bachelor of Science with a major in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. From this, I became passionate about ecology in urban landscapes and ended up undertaking a Master of Urban Horticulture to enhance what I learnt during my undergraduate studies.

What inspires you about your current area of study?

Green spaces are widely acknowledged to provide environmental, economic and health benefits, and ultimately improve livability. Consequently, there is a growing demand to create greener cities as these areas become increasingly urbanised. This requires people in the horticultural industry who have the knowledge and expertise to effectively design, implement and manage urban greenery.

What advice would you give to students considering study?

I have loved being able to be learn alongside like-minded, passionate students. This has really enhanced my university learning experience. I’d recommend all students get involved in all aspects of university - actively participate in classes, take the time to get to know your peers and lecturers, create study groups, join student societies and volunteer with PhD students.... you only get out what you put in! So make the most of it.

Have you received any scholarships?

The Melbourne Global Scholars Awards helped to fund me going Singapore to undertake a six-week internship with a green roof and wall company. Working overseas in Singapore was a new and highly rewarding experience.

The Cronin Memorial Scholarship has provided me with assistance to undertake horticultural-related activities across Melbourne that have enhanced my current knowledge and skills on urban horticulture. This includes attending conferences and workshops.

How did you internship shape your career goals?

The internship at GWS Living Art, a green roof and wall specialist company in Singapore, has provided me with not only a wealth of knowledge through various practical experiences, but it has enhanced my personal and professional development which are key attributes for having a successful and impactful career. It was an eye-opening experience that has reassured me that working in the green roof and wall industry is a suitable future career pathway for me following studies.
