Student Clubs and Societies

Get involved and go beyond the classroom. Student clubs and societies will help you develop both socially and intellectually.

Joining a club or society is a great way to make new friends and explore your interests. Student societies run social events, activities, career networking, tutorials and many other programs.

University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU)

The University of Melbourne Student Union (UMSU) automatically gives you access to all Student Union services, including:

  • Art, culture and fun activities
  • A free weekly BBQ and a gig on Tuesdays across the semester
  • Support services to help you when you need it
  • Representation on the issues that affect you.

Science-related clubs and societies

Here is a selection of science-related clubs you might want to consider joining:

Information and support for clubs

The Faculty offers clubs and societies a range of administrative support.

  • Student groups are able to access a range of admin support services such as:

    • Venue booking
    • Some financial support
    • Information about grants and funding from the university
    • Professional development opportunities
    • Event/initiative promotion

Funding levels will be determined by the Faculty based on the Science member base, audience of the event and how the funding will be spent. An online application form will be shared with you to upload your request for financial support.

  • In order to receive financial support from the Faculty, you will need to send information to sci-studentexperience@unimelb.edu.au. Please tell us:

    • Your club membership details
    • Current executive team contact details and positions
    • What communication channels do you currently use to promote your events?
    • How many student members (and Science members) do you currently have?
    • Are you affiliated with any other faculty?
    • Do you receive funding from any other departments/ schools/ faculties (such as UMSU, GSA, School of Physics etc)?
    • When is your committee changeover

    Next Steps

    • Submit and outline plan of events for 2025 and highlight for which events you require funding and specify what funding is required for (The purpose of this planning strategy is to help FoS better support clubs & societies, identify areas in which FoS could offer further support, and to avoid clashes with other FoS and university events.)
    • Once approved, we will be in contact to finalise your affiliation with the Faculty.
  • Once event collaboration between the Faculty and club has been established, we require the following from the club representative:

    • Consistent reporting on events such as successes and areas of improvement. After each event, the event lead will be responsible for reviewing the event and informing the Faculty of what worked and areas for improvement. This is done as a component of the outline invoice submission.
    • Consistent reporting of attendance statistics for funded events. After each event, the event lead will be responsible for reporting the number of students who attended the event to the Faculty.

The benefits of student clubs complying with these requirements is to ensure the Faculty is across all Science student-led events. It is also an opportunity for reflection amongst the clubs and promotes success stories following events that went well.

  • The Faculty can promote club events on Facebook & in the newsletters (BSc, BAg/DiGs, Graduate Coursework). There may also be opportunities for further promotion of events.

Promotion of your events on Facebook & in newsletters:

    • The newsletters are currently sent out fortnightly (BSc) and monthly (Grad Coursework & BAg/DiGs). To feature an upcoming event in the newsletter, please submit a request through this Qualtrics form. Events will be featured in the most appropriate edition, not more than 2 weeks ahead of the event.
    • We can also post upcoming events to the Unimelb Science Student News Facebook page. Posts should be sent to science-news@unimelb.edu.au and include the following details:
      • Event title
      • Date and time
      • Venue
      • Contact person and details
      • A brief outline of the event
      • Event poster
      • Event rego link
    • Please note: we require a minimum of 3 weeks' notice to promote an event.

    We can also provide:

    • Dedicated clubs and societies 'feature' in newsletter
    • Event poster displayed on LCD screens in science buildings
    • Relevant events featured on the Enrichment Planner
