Enhance your research experience

We're dedicated to delivering a suite of events designed to enhance your research experience, including thesis bootcamps for those in early and late stages of candidature, wellbeing seminars, our GR Professional Skills Series, volunteering opportunities and much more.

Below you’ll find a snapshot of some of our key events. Event details will become available on the Information for Graduate Researchers page throughout the year.

Booting Up Your Thesis

The Booting Up Your Thesis bootcamp, delivered annually for early-stage graduate researchers, is an ideal opportunity for those wanting to learn more about data management tools, how to effectively manage their time, and how to prepare for the writing up stage ahead. Registrations open mid-year. Keep an eye out on our events page.

The virtual offering allowed me to attend from New York, due to the border closure! It was such a relief to hear that I am on track for confirmation and expectations for the next two years of research. It also gave me great ideas for career trajectories. Very helpful and well programmed! Jenna Hall

Thesis Bootcamp

The Thesis Bootcamp is the perfect place for later stage graduate researchers to develop thesis writing skills while dedicating time to writing up. You’ll learn techniques for successful writing and strategies to manage your time, as well as hear from various experts on how to get the most out of the resources available to you before submission. The Faculty of Science offers several Thesis Boot Camps throughout the year so keep an eye on our events page to register.

Feedback from attendees

The Thesis Bootcamp is a great place to find inspiration, tips and motivation for thesis writing.

The bootcamp is a great chance to get in touch with other students across the faculty... I'm extremely grateful to have been part of it.

3MT® Competition

Showcase and promote your research through the Faculty of Science’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. This is a great opportunity to share and immerse yourself in the diverse range of research occurring across the faculty. It’s also a great way to practice effective communication and prepare for the University’s 3MT competition. The Faculty's competition is held in May/June of each year, so keep an eye out for more details in our GR Newsletter and our events page.

Mikaeylah Davidson (2023 winner)

...doing the 3MT gave me the opportunity to look back on all I have achieved over the last three years of my candidature, and reflect on how much I have gained, but also on how much I still have to look forward to. It is an amazing opportunity to engage with your research that goes beyond the nitty gritty of everyday, by placing it into context and remembering why what you are doing matters. It also allows you to develop and refine your communication skills, all while talking about your own science…”

Rachael Rogers (2022 winner)

Participating in the 3MT was a great experience. Thanks to the preparation workshop and the one on one feedback session, I learnt how to present my thesis as a story and make it accessible to a lay audience. I learnt some great tips on how to calm my nerves before a presentation as well as how to keep an audience engaged. Participating in the Science 3MT also made the university wide competition seem less daunting and gave me the confidence to apply.

Nilakhi Poddar (2021 winner)

3MT was amazing as it helped me to articulate science in a very special way to an audience. It was exhilarating to showcase the big picture of the science I do and that is valued. It has since then helped me to hone my communication skills in various presentations and made me passionate to share my science with everyone around me.

Sarah McColl-Gausden (2020 winner)

The Science 3MT competition was a great way to practise communicating my research story, especially when everything was online and speaking to a computer screen can feel even more daunting. I’ve since used those skills in the University-wide 3MT final and several online conferences and presentations.

Rohan Byrne (2019 winner)

3MT helped me realise what makes my science special. Nothing energises you quite like standing up and delivering for a packed house - and discovering that your project deserves attention!
