I completed a Bachelor of Science before moving into the Master of Data Science program because mathematics and statistics has been a passion for me for a long time. The University of Melbourne was an obvious choice for me as it is famous for its culture and education with its global ranking.

I first took foundation studies at UNSW before moving to Melbourne as I like the course structure here at Melbourne and I believe the quality of study can be guaranteed. There are also various extra-curricular activities and plenty of resources to enrich the study and life. I love the opportunities, public lectures and workshops that Faculty of Science offers because they introduce resources and advanced knowledge to all students.

When I first came to Melbourne, I was curious about programming so I took subjects in computing foundations. Data science is a study area that requires both mathematics and computing, so it was the ideal program for me. Science is such a broad study area, and our university offers high-quality courses and great opportunities for science students. If anyone is interested in science or studying at university – be brace and curious and don’t ever think that you can’t do something. Focus on enjoying the learning process.

I’ve been a mentee in both the Access Connection Mentoring Program and the STEM Mentoring program where I’ve had regular meetings with my mentors – who are both senior managers in their fields. These mentoring programs allow me to communicate directly with people from the industry and provide me with a better understanding of applied science in the real world.

I’ve been able to take this experience and become a Science Peer Mentor to lead sessions with first-year science students and help others by answering questions and supporting them while they start their studies. Mentoring has enhanced my awareness of the fantastic resources and opportunities the university provides and the various events and program in the Faculty of Science.
