Selection criteria – and how to meet them

Academic merit

The faculty uses scores such as the ATAR (or equivalent), graduate selection scores and weighted average marks (WAM). You do not need to provide details.

Rural student criteria

A rural or isolated area is defined as an area with a Remote Areas (ASGC-RA) Australian Standard Geographic Classification of: RA2 – Inner Regional, RA3 – Outer Regional, RA4 – Remote, or RA5 – Very Remote. The Department of Health and Ageing uses this categorisation system for a number of programs related to medical practice in Australia. You can check the classification of your rural or isolated address on the Department of Health and Ageing website.

Please provide evidence of your rural status with documentation.

For awards that are automatic consideration that have a rural requirement,  please ensure your home details are up to date in your student portal.

You are eligible to apply if:

Undergraduate students

• Your residential (home) address is in an area with a classification of RA2 or higher, and
• If you are a Year 12 student, you must also have completed the final two years of schooling at a rural or regional secondary school (i.e. not one in a postcode defined as a major city).

Graduate students

• Your residential (home) address is in an area with a classification of RA2 or higher

Financial need

If you wish to be considered for any award where financial need is a requirement or preference, you must submit an online Student Financial Assessment form and applications will be assessed and ranked by Scholarships & Bursaries (University Services) using the Student Financial Assessment process. The form can be accessed at: financial need application

Other disadvantage

If you are applying for scholarships where experience of disadvantage is a criteria, you will be asked to provide a short statement with details. You can support this statement with documentation such as medical certificates, letters from medical professionals, or statutory declarations.

Personal statement (no more than 300 words)

All applicants are required to write a short personal statement to support their application.

Supporting documentation

The table below shows the types of documentation that can be used to support your application. Please note that family name and address must be on documentation. All claims must have evidence and be recent.

Please note that the application form only allows one document to be uploaded for each criteria. Usually one of the listed documents is sufficient, but if you would like to provide multiple documents you should save them as a single file for uploading.  Remember to include your name and student ID in the file name.

Additional requirements (non DVM related)

Some scholarships require you to provide additional statements. You only need to complete these if you wish to be considered for the following:

• Warren Thornton Memorial Scholarship: You will need to provide a statement of your interest in the Dairy Industry. Such interest could extend to pasture production, cow nutrition, reproduction and health, calf management, milk harvesting and processing, agribusiness, dairy product marketing, and governance of the dairy industry. This statement should be no more than 1000 words.
• John and Jenny Barnett Memorial Prize: You will need to provide a one-page document that outlines your research proposal
• John James Woodward Rural Prize: You will need to submit a statement to show your interest in the preservation of the environment, in particular rural and Agricultural environments. The statement should be between 500-1000 words.

Additional requirements for DVM related  Awards

• Dr James (Jim) Richard Gannon Scholarship: Applicants must submit a statement (up to 500 words) outlining their demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in small animal medicine (particularly greyhound health) after graduation
• Dr Robert Neville McCarthy Scholarship:  Students are required to submit a letter addressing the criteria
• Maggs Johnson Travel Bursary: Students are required to submit a letter addressing the criteria
• Yvette Chen Prize for  Animal Welfare: Students are to provide a written submission addressing the criteria.

Support already received from other awards

When determining the recipients for scholarships/bursaries/funding the support already received, in the form of other student awards, by all eligible applicants will be taken into account. Please note this doesn't prevent applicants from applying if they have already received funding.
