What is breadth?
As an undergraduate student, you will take at least four subjects in a different area of study from your own degree. We call these subjects ‘Breadth’.
If you are a Bachelor of Arts student, you could choose to take subjects in chemistry, for example. Or if you are taking a Bachelor of Commerce, you might choose some zoology subjects.

You can take a huge range of science subjects as Breadth, as long as you meet the subject requirements.

Taking science Breadth gives you a set of subjects to complement your degree.
Enjoy Economics, but want to give yourself a mathematical advantage? You may want to take the Mathematics for Economics breadth track.
Studying Actuarial Sciences, but curious about how risks like famine and disaster can be mitigated? You could consider the Understanding Disasters, Their Management and Planning breadth track.
Using your Breadth in science can allow you to move towards your dream job, with a multidisciplinary toolset.

Try out something different
Science might look vastly different from what you are studying – and this is also where Breadth comes in. Breadth gives you the rare chance to experiment with something completely different.
You might be starting a Bachelor of Music, but have a deep love for plants and greenery. Taking the Living with Plants Breadth track would turn a hobby into an academic pursuit.
Perhaps you’ve always been fascinated by genetics, but want to focus on engineering. Taking genetics through breadth would allow you to focus on an engineering career, while learning about something intriguing, but different.
What’s special about science?
A different way of working
Science subjects involve a different learning experience from other degrees. In addition to the usual lectures and tutorials, you might also learn in laboratory-based practicals or get out into the field.
Being exposed to these different ways of working makes students experienced in Science outstanding graduates.
A technical perspective
By using your Breadth subjects to explore the sciences, you can understand the specifics of some of the biggest problems facing humankind. Using science to broaden your studies will give you the general knowledge and technical answers to become a real expert on the issues that matter – from automation to depopulation.
A rigorous, scientific base
Science Breadth will equip you with critical analytical skills. Working with the scientific method, learning how to conduct experiments, exploring what makes research findings reliable and true, and how to critique them are invaluable skills – skills that will sharpen you academically, and prepare you for any workplace you enter.

What can science Breadth look like?
You have lots of flexibility in how you manage your Breadth subjects.
Mixing it up
On the one hand, you could take a mix of subjects, sampling lots of different sciences.
On the other hand, you might pursue one scientific topic in more depth, by selecting a Breadth track.
A Breadth track is a set of three or more subjects that progressively develops knowledge and skills relevant to some domain, theme, topic or issue.
For example, you might want to explore Marine Biology alongside your core subjects, and opt for the Marine Life Breadth track. To take this Breadth track, you would enrol in:
