Building the intelligence layer for a solar-dominated energy system
Solstice AI is a Melbourne-based technology company developing advanced forecasting and analytics for the renewable energy sector. Its mission is to build the intelligence layer needed to support an increasingly solar-dominated energy system.
The company combines artificial intelligence with satellite imagery, weather information and operational data to produce highly localised forecasts of solar generation. These forecasts help solar farms, batteries, utilities and energy-market participants anticipate rapid changes in generation caused by moving cloud cover, supporting more efficient operations and the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Applying data science to real industry challenges
Solstice AI has hosted two groups of Master of Data Science students through the University of Melbourne’s Industry Projects program. Each group worked on genuine technical challenges connected to the company’s research and product-development priorities.
The students engaged with real datasets and open-ended problems of the kind encountered in a fast-moving technology company. They explored different analytical approaches, assessed their effectiveness and considered how their findings could be translated into practical improvements.
“The students have brought fresh perspectives and strong technical capabilities to some difficult, real-world data science problems,” said Peter Ilfrich, cofounder and CTO of Solstice AI. “Their findings have directly informed our work and contributed to improvements in our products.”
For a growing technology company, the program provides valuable research capacity while creating opportunities to explore new ideas and identify promising technical talent.
From an industry project to a full-time role
One of the most significant outcomes of Solstice AI’s participation has been the development of a lasting professional relationship with one of the students.
After completing the Industry Project, the student undertook several paid contract engagements with Solstice AI over the past year. Having demonstrated strong technical ability and an excellent fit with the team, the student is now preparing to join the company in a full-time role.
“The program gave us an opportunity to work closely with talented students, see how they approached complex technical problems and how they present their findings,” Peter said. “What began as a university project developed into an ongoing working relationship and, ultimately, a full-time position with our team.”
A mutually valuable experience
Solstice AI has sought to give students an authentic view of applied data science within an early-stage technology company. This includes exposure to imperfect real-world data, evolving requirements and the challenge of turning research into useful and dependable commercial products.
“We hope the students have gained some valuable industry experience and also enjoyed applying data science outside the classroom,” Peter said. “Their work has created tangible value for Solstice AI, while giving them experience with meaningful problems that need to be solved for ongoing large-scale uptake of solar energy generation.”
