Indigenous Students in STEM Research Internship (ISSRI)

The Indigenous Students in STEM Research Internship (ISSRI) is an opportunity for First Nations students to undertake a research experience in a University of Melbourne lab.

You will research full-time on a project over four weeks supported by a leading academic, and share your work at an end of program symposium. There will also be opportunities to connect with the ISSRI community, as well as First Nations STEM leaders.

ISSRI is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at any stage within the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Extended) or Bachelor of Agriculture.

During semester break from Monday 29 June to Friday 24 July 2026

Program Details

  • $4,000 stipend based on completion of program milestones, including lab time and final presentation
  • Support from an academic mentor
  • Opportunities to connect with First Nations academics, current PhD students and other ISSRI participants
  • If required, accommodation at a Residential College for the duration of the program

Meet the ISSRI Coordinator: Kapisha

Kapisha has worked in the education sector for over 15 years, across Australia and New Zealand. Kapisha is the Program Coordinator for the Amgen Scholars Program, which gives undergraduate students from across Oceania hands-on lab experience at the University of Melbourne. It is Kapisha's first year coordinating ISSRI!

Frequently asked questions

  • You will be matched with a lab based on your interests and skills, and you'll work closely with a researcher in that lab on a day-to-day basis. The goals of your research experience will be co-developed by you and your lab.

  • There is no WAM requirement but academic progress will be considered to determine suitability for the program.

  • This program is full-time. Please contact the ISSRI team if you require alternative arrangements.

  • Interns are required to submit the following to successfully complete the program:

    • 20 days of lab time
    • Completion of presentation at end of program symposium
