Animals and us: The role of nature in society
On Wednesday 8 October, more than 120 in-person guests and 110 online viewers joined a Science at Melbourne Public Lecture on 'Animals and us: The role of nature in society'. The discussion explored the many ways animals shape our world – from their role in ecosystems and food systems to the ethical and cultural questions that arise from human-animal relationships.
Moderated by urban ecology and conservation expert Dr Kylie Soanes, the panel featured:

Panellists discussed the ecological, emotional and economic significance of animals in society, and shared insights into how research is helping us balance human needs with the protection of our animal co-inhabitants.
The panel also highlighted research underway to protect wildlife, rethink food systems and redefine our responsibilities toward the species we depend on.
