BioSciences shine at 3MT Competition
The Faculty of Science celebrated an outstanding result at the University of Melbourne's Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Grand Final, with School of BioSciences PhD candidate Lukian Adams taking out the University's top prize.
Lukian won the competition with his presentation, Hot fish summer: Fish find cold water to flee the heat, earning a $5,000 prize and the opportunity to represent the University at the upcoming Asia-Pacific 3MT Competition, hosted by the University of Queensland.

“It was such an amazing experience to present my work to a room full of friendly faces, in a format where I could really express the passion I have for my research,” Lukian said.
“Competition was fierce and it really could have gone to anyone. My huge congratulations to all who participated — I can’t wait for the next round!”
The Faculty was strongly represented at the grand final by Lukian and two other researchers from the School of BioSciences: Georgia Bennett and Sarah Farrell.
The trio secured their places in the grand final following impressive presentations at last month's Faculty of Science 3MT Final, where Lukian and Sarah shared first place and Georgia was named runner-up.
Competing against finalists from all faculties across the University, all three Science representatives delivered presentations that showcased the depth of research talent and science communication skills within the Faculty.

This is the second time in three years that the 3MT title has been awarded to the Faculty of Science, following Ashritha Dorai’s (School of BioSciences) win in 2024.
The Three Minute Thesis competition challenges graduate researchers to present their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. Developed by the University of Queensland, the competition is now held at universities around the world.
Congratulations to Lukian, Georgia and Sarah on their outstanding achievements and for representing the Faculty of Science so successfully.
