Data science and communication – a perfect pairing

Master of Data Science student Chi Zhang is passionate about the power of data, and says it goes hand in hand with communication.

“What I love about data science is that it’s more than just theory – it’s a combination of analysis and interpretation,” said Chi.

“You also need to be able to communicate your findings.”

While completing his Bachelor of Science (majoring in Data Science) and Master of Data Science at the University of Melbourne, Chi took on the role of Student Representative throughout both courses, which he says helped improve his communication skills.

“I collected student feedback on each subject, summarised the information, and reported this back to staff along with my recommendations,” said Chi.

“The role really helped me improve my professional skills – I highly recommend the Student Representative role to others.”

In the future, Chi would like to work as an analyst providing consulting services, combining his passion for both data and communication to solve real-world problems.

“Data is everywhere, and it’s very powerful. I’ve enjoyed learning how to handle it throughout my degrees, and developing both technical and professional skills,” said Chi.

“Data science is an exciting domain to be in!”
