Faculty of Science Professor appointed to key Australian Research Council role

University of Melbourne Professor Gavin Reid has been appointed to the Australian Research Council as Executive Director – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.

Professor Reid is currently Associate Dean (Infrastructure) at the Faculty of Science and holds appointments in the School of Chemistry and the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacology.

Professor Reid will step down from the role of Associate Dean but will continue his funded research work at the University of Melbourne. He will commence his role with the ARC on 28th August.

Faculty of Science Dean Professor Moira O’Bryan congratulated Professor Reid on his appointment.

“Professor Reid has made significant contributions to his fields of chemical and biomolecular analysis. He is well respected in his area of expertise, and has achieved a great deal in the role of Associate Dean,” Professor O’Bryan said.

“I am thrilled the ARC has recognised Professor Reid’s expertise and grateful for the wonderful contribution he has made to our faculty,” she said.

Professor Reid said he was looking forward to representing the disciplines of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences on the ARC executive.

“I’m delighted to be helping promote and shape the future of research funding, translation and impact within these fields in Australia,” Professor Reid said.

“The ARC is the major supporter in this country of foundational and applied research and research training in Australia. They are critical to Australia’s research landscape,” he said.

As Executive Director, Professor Reid will provide high-quality advice to the ARC executive to help promote and shape the future of research funding, translation and impact of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.
