International workshop in Delhi explores the future of food
Leading experts have come together in Delhi to address the challenges of food production through the Food for a Healthy Planet workshop presented by the University of Melbourne, Jindal School of Environment & Sustainability and National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM).
Held on Friday 20 September, the workshop coincided with the World Food India Conference in Delhi and explored the global agricultural, environmental and nutritional pressures facing the future of food.
University of Melbourne Professor Surinder Singh Chauhan said with global demand for food expected to increase by 60 to 70 per cent by mid-century due to population growth – now is the time to bring our shared expertise together.
“India and Australia are two of the world’s largest agricultural producing countries. Long-term and healthy food production is of critical importance to both our growing nations,” Professor Singh Chauhan said.
“We are excited to combine our experience with our Indian partners and provide a platform to share critical knowledge and resources to understand the demand for food in the face of climate change and other environmental issues.
“This is a critical time to address these rising challenges and one which the University of Melbourne is positioned to tackle.”
During the day, leading researchers showcased their expertise in four key themes including agricultural production and the impact of climate change, environmental sustainability, food fortification and food technology and processing innovations.
More than 35 students and academics from the three institutions attended and the themed sessions were complemented with networking and breakout activities.

Director of NIFTEM, Dr Harinder S Oberoi said they are proud to collaborate and host a workshop that will bring together the leading experts from India and Australia to address these critical issues.

Assistant Professor Rahul Devrani, Assistant Dean (Career Services) at Jindal School of Environment & Sustainability said the team is excited to present this joint workshop.
“By collaborating, India and Australia can forge a path towards sustainable food security and environmental stewardship, transforming lifestyles to reduce pollution and promote a healthier, more resilient planet for future generations," Assistant Professor Devrani said.
University of Melbourne’s student recruitment team was available on the day to deliver an information session about study opportunities in Science.
The workshop is one of the initiatives organised by the University of Melbourne as part of the India delegation and launch of the Melbourne Global Centre – Delhi on 17 September.
