Leading mathematician honoured by Australian Mathematical Society Medal
University of Melbourne Associate Professor Jack Hall has received the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) Medal in recognition of his outstanding mathematical research in the field of algebra.
This achievement was announced today at the 68th Annual Meeting in Auckland, New Zealand.
Associate Professor Hall,an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow and the Director of Postgraduate Teaching in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, was jointly awarded the 2024 AustMS Medal with Associate Professor Jiakun Liu, who recently moved to the University of Sydney from the University of Wollongong.

The AustMS awards the medal annually to members of the AustMS in recognition of distinguished research in the mathematical sciences, within 15 years of completing their PhD. Opening the meeting, AustMS President, Professor Jessica Purcell, congratulated the 2024 award winners for their outstanding achievements across mathematical research, teaching, and publications.
The Medal Committee cited Associate Professor Hall’s contributions to the study of algebraic stacks, saying: “His work has provided foundational results in the theory and is destined to have a lasting impact.”
Associate Professor Hall said it was an honour to receive this prestigious award.
“While my research has always been driven by intellectual curiosity, I am extremely grateful to the AustMS for recognising my contributions, and for giving me the opportunity to share my passion for this corner of mathematics with a wider audience,” Associate Professor Hall said.
Associate Professor Hall’s research aims to understand the algebra and geometry from classification problems that arise in mathematics and the applications to physics, such as quantum computing and robotics.
Associate Professor Hall received his PhD from Stanford University and went on to postdoctoral positions in Sweden and Canberra, before accepting a permanent position at the University of Arizona, followed by the University of Melbourne in 2020.
