Partner spotlight: Lithodat
Empowering innovation with real-world data
Lithodat specialises in building advanced, global geoscience data platforms that integrate geological, geochemical, geochronological, and spatial datasets. These platforms support a wide array of users in research, exploration, and data science initiatives across the globe.
Under the leadership of Managing Director, Dr. Fabian Kohlmann, a University of Melbourne alumnus with a PhD in Earth Sciences, Lithodat has placed a strong emphasis on strategic partnerships and technical innovation. Student engagement has become a core part of the company’s culture—reflecting a belief in nurturing talent while solving meaningful, real-world challenges.
“It has been a real pleasure working with you all and supporting the Industry Projects Program over the past several years,” said Fabian. “Student engagement has become a valued part of our culture.”
A track record of impactful projects
Over the past five years, Lithodat has hosted and supervised a wide range of student-led projects, all grounded in real operational needs. These projects have included:
- Designing deduplication algorithms for large-scale relational databases
- Building interactive dashboards to analyse platform usage and enhance user engagement
- Applying machine learning models to classify rock types using extensive geochemical datasets
These contributions have not only delivered technical solutions but have also shaped Lithodat’s internal systems and product offerings in measurable ways.
From students to team members
One of the standout outcomes of this partnership has been talent identification and retention. Lithodat has welcomed two student participants into full-time roles as data scientists, recognising their technical proficiency and cultural fit.
“Their contributions have been instrumental in expanding our technical capabilities, and they continue to grow with us as integral members of our organisation.”
A valuable partnership
Lithodat continues to be impressed by the skills, motivation, and fresh thinking that students bring to each project. Many have demonstrated strong abilities in data engineering, spatial analytics, visualisation, and collaborative problem-solving. The company is committed to offering students meaningful, real-world exposure through its projects.
The program has been a valuable asset to Lithodat, and we would be delighted to participate in future cycles. Thank you again for the opportunity and for the excellent coordination over the years.
We thank Lithodat for their continued partnership and for fostering the next generation of data and geoscience professionals.
