From curiosity to change: How discovery science transforms our world
On Wednesday 12 August, more than 150 in-person and online guests attended the Science at Melbourne Conversation ‘From curiosity to change: How discovery science transforms our world’, part of Science at Melbourne Festival 2026.
Panellists explored the value of discovery science and the role of fundamental research in shaping the world around us.

Alanta Colley, Program Manager at Melbourne Biodiversity Institute moderated an insightful discussion that featured:
- Professor Phillip Urquijo, professor of experimental particle physics and Director of SABRE South, School of Physics
- Professor Nina Weddell, evolutionary biologist and ARC Laureate Fellow, School of BioSciences
- Professor James Osborne, Assistant Dean of Graduate Education and ARC Future Fellow, School of Mathematics and Statistics.
Panellists discussed the meaning of discovery science and reflected on challenges and biases in their own research. They highlighted the importance of collaboration, the global nature of discovery science, and examined how scientific discoveries shape our world.
The experts also reflected on the future of discovery research, including what excites them and the impacts of AI, and their advice to future scientists.
Around 30 inspiring young scientists from the University’s STEM Edge mentoring program joined the discussion, gaining valuable access to the panel and the chance to ask their most pressing questions about discovery science.
