General Resources
The Foodprint Melbourne project team has collated a range of external resources for teacher use across a variety of food systems subjects.
Foodprint Melbourne has a range of curriculum resources available for use with the Year 9 Geography 'Biomes and food security' unit. There are also a range of external resources which can be used to explore a wide variety of food systems issues. These external resources can also be used to support the Food Studies VCE units.
-
Food systems
"A food system encompasses all the stages of keeping us fed: growing, harvesting, packing, processing, transforming, marketing, consuming and disposing of food" - UN FAO definition
-
Global food security
When all people have reliable access to sufficient, affordable, nutritious food to support a healthy life.
-
Food waste
Around a third of food is wasted. This is a waste of all the natural resources used to produce the food and it creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, as it decomposes in landfill
-
Developments in sustainable farming
Different approaches have been proposed to feed a growing population sustainably, including sustainable intensification, genetic modification and organic agriculture.
-
Ethical food production and consumption
“Taking food ethics seriously, then, requires …that we try to take into account all the different values involved in our food choices, looking at all the consequences, weighing them up and trying to decide what is right, all things considered” - Food Ethics Council
-
Food production and the environment
The food system has many impacts on the environment (including on biodiversity, soils, waterways and climate change) and limits to natural resources also pose challenges for the food system.
